Sara Angel on Max Stern and art restitution

Over the past three years Sara Angel’s primary research focus has been the mechanisms of Nazi-era art recovery and the international importance of the act of post-World War II restitution. Her interest has been the restitution of twelve paintings that belonged to Max Stern, one of Canada’s most renowned art dealers, from the 1950s through the 1970s. Throughout his life, Stern never revealed that in 1937, before his arrival in Canada, the Nazi’s forced him to sell over 200 paintings, among them the dozen works that Angel has researched in detail.
