No artist in Canada is more famous for making photographic portraits than Yousuf Karsh (1908–2002).Through his work, he created a unique chronicle of twentieth-century Canadian life, providing important insights into themes of immigration, national identity, and belonging. Using Karsh’s portraits as a foundation, this guide leads students through an encounter with the people and events that form the history of Canada. Students will examine how portraits can shape identities, document histories, and deepen our understanding of influential Canadians.
