Kurelek painting sells for $472,000

“Hot Day in Kensington Market” earns double its estimate

The 1972 painting Hot Day in Kensington Market is one of 21 works in William Kurelek’s Toronto series. Better known for his paintings of rural, prairie life and Ukrainian-Canadian cultural events and celebrations, the Toronto series shows Kurelek was also preoccupied with the bustling city in which he lived and worked for a significant amount of his career.

Hot Day in Kensington Market sold for $472,000, at the Consignor Canadian Fine Art auction on May 29, 2018, more than double its value. A second painting by Kurelek, Hauling Hay, 1967, also fetched an impressive $94,400.
