Jan Wade’s altarpiece GI Jesus/War Is Over offers critical commentary on the imperialist Vietnam War (1955–75). The central panel features toy soldiers on a backgammon board, shell casings, military stars, hands displaying the peace sign, and the words “GI Jesus.” The two flanking panels each consist of a cross with a skeleton in the centre, targets, and Scrabble tiles forming musicians John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s well-known anti-war message “War Is Over! (If You Want It).” As a lifelong pacifist, Wade often makes references to war and its connections to colonialism and legacies of trauma in her works. Some of them have focused on grieving and honouring her American cousin Michael, a Vietnam War veteran who returned to America transformed by his experience of war.
