For her series Token | Contemporary Ongoing, 2019, Brewster asked members of the Caribbean diaspora in her community to contribute personal belongings tied to their cultural heritage. The objects were exhibited alongside pictures Brewster created. This installation view shows photo-based gel transfers depicting a monkey jar (left)—used to store water—and a powder puff box. Brewster’s choice of technique, involving the transfer of a photographic image from one surface to another using a gel medium, serves as a metaphor for the movement embedded in the depicted objects and/or the experiences and imaginations of their owners.
