Earthlings on now at Esker Foundation
The Art Canada Institute launches the online art book Shuvinai Ashoona: Life & Work by Nancy Campbell at the opening of the Earthlings exhibition at Esker Foundation in Calgary.
“Not only has Inuit art seldom been seen as part of the contemporary canon in Canadian and international museums, but it has also been separated from other Indigenous art in Canadian museums. ... Shuvinai’s ongoing collaborations and exhibitions with Toronto artist Shary Boyle (b. 1972), an artist of international status who was the Canadian representative at the Venice Biennale in 2013, have also increased her profile and presented her work in contemporary contexts previously not considered for Inuit artists.” - Nancy Campbell, Shuvinai Ashoona: Life & Work
The Esker celebrates the works of contemporary artists Shuvinai Ashoona, Shary Boyle, and the ceramic artists of Matchbox studio in Rankin Inlet with their exhibition Earthlings on view until May 7, 2017. With their collaborative explorations the Inuit artists in this exhibition are redefining northern art for southern audiences.
The Art Canada Institute was pleased to launch Nancy Cambell’s online art book on Shuvinai Ashoona at Esker Foundation in Calgary for the opening of Earthlings in January.
