Hart House Collects Canada at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery
New exhibition spotlights U of T’s role in assembling Canadian art masterpieces.
Last Thursday the University of Toronto Art Centre unveiled its new national touring exhibition A Story of Canadian Art: As Told by the Hart House Collection, organized by the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, curated by Dr Christine Boyanoski, and featuring forty-one works drawn from the celebrated Hart House Collection of Canadian art. What makes this exhibition so fantastic is that students helped to select all of its paintings. Since the early 1920s, Hart House’s Art Committee has been buying works by emerging artists. Today the collection includes paintings by such masters as Lawren Harris, Tom Thomson, Prudence Heward, and Paraskeva Clark.
